OBITUARIES

Carolyn (Roupe) Hamner

Carolyn Elizabeth (Roupe) Hamner, formerly of Midland, Texas, and Waynesburg, Pa., died Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Friends Care Community. She was 99.

She was born on Nov. 18, 1906, in Ninevah, Pa., to Silas and Jessica (Crawford) Roupe.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Samuel Theodore Roupe and Ernest Franklin Roupe, her two sisters, Nellie Wood and Irene May; her first husband, Thomas Raymond Crawford, who died in 1952; and their one son, James Patton Crawford who was born in 1925 and died in 1971.

Carolyn married Charles Hedrey Hamner and lived happily with him in Midland, Texas for 30 years. After Charles’ death, she returned to Pennsylvania for a short time and then came to Ohio to be near her four grandsons and their families.

Carolyn was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Nothing brought her more joy than seeing her grandsons and great grandchildren and she showered them with love. She always had a smile and kind word for those she met, and was gracious and loving to the end.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Virginia (Sturm) Crawford of Enon; grandsons and their wives, Stephen Paul Crawford of Columbus, James P. and Dinah Crawford of Casstown, Carl Scott and Nancy Crawford of Mt. Vernon and Mark Thomas and Amy Crawford of Yellow Springs; and nine great grandchildren including Matthew, Samuel and Grant Crawford of Yellow Springs; one great-great grandson; a cousin and several nieces and nephew in Pennsylvania.

Funeral services were conducted at the Behm Funeral Home, Waynesburg, Pa. A memorial service was held at Friends Care Community on Sunday, Oct. 15. The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Friends Care who provided loving care to Carolyn in her final years. Those who choose to celebrate her life may contribute to Friends Care Community or to Hospice of Dayton in her memory.

Merle Gasho

Merle Gasho died in his residence in Yellow Springs on Tuesday, Oct. 18. He was 95.

He was born in Beach, N.D., on Oct. 22, 1910, the son of Penrose Presley Gasho and Juna Runyan.

Mr. Gasho was employed as a machinist by Southwestern Portland Cement Company for more than 30 years. He also built the Anthony Wayne Motel, now known as the Springs Motel, in 1951. He was a good father and husband.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Gertrude.

He is survived by his sister, Eileen Gasho of Xenia; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald Gasho, and Jerry and Carol Gasho; and by his grandsons, Douglas and Martin, all of Yellow Springs.

Harold Warren Ankeney

Harold Warren Ankeney of Xenia passed away Monday, Oct. 16, at Greene Memorial Hospital. He was 85.

He was born April 9, 1921, in Clermont County, Ohio, the son of J. Blaine and Gwendolyn (Oberlin) Ankeney. Harold was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II and was a farmer in Greene County all of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Clarabelle Revoir and -Eleanor Bone.

He is survived by his loving wife, Wilanna (DeVoe) Ankeney, whom he married Oct. 18, 1944; six children and their spouses, David and Connie Ankeney of Cedarville, Robert and Kathy Ankeney of Cedarville, Sarah and Tony Preston of Jamestown, Alan and Denise Ankeney of Xenia, Ronald and Robyn Ankeney of Xenia and Kent and Kelly Ankeney of Cedarville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary K. Keehn of Yellow Springs and Betty and Lawrence Filson of Xenia; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 19, at McColaugh Funeral Home, Xenia, with interment following at Beaver Cemetery.

Joyce E. Tanner

Joyce E. Tanner of Jeffersonville passed away Monday, Oct. 9, at Fayette Memorial Hospital. She was 65.

She was born April 16, 1941, in Yellow Springs, the daughter of the late Glenn Gasho and Ocie Moore Gasho Oldham.

She had attended Greeneview Schools and had been employed in area nursing homes and local retail stores and most recently at Detty’s Market in Jeffersonville.

She was preceded in death by a stepbrother, Nick Oldham.

She is survived by her loving companion of 21 years, James O. Cooper; son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Andrea Tanner of Xenia; grandchildren, Jennifer and Brittany Tanner; sister, Sharon Cyphers of Xenia; brother, Larry Gasho of Xenia; and stepbrothers, William Oldham of Xenia and Daniel Oldham of Jamestown.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Littleton Funeral Home in Sabina with burial in the Milledgeville-Plymouth Cemetery.

Robert Hagerman

Robert Hagerman died at home of natural causes on Saturday, Oct. 14, in Lakeland, Fla., surrounded by his family. He was 90.

Robert was born in Dayton, Ohio. He was a long-time resident of Xenia and worked as a tool and die maker for Vernay Laboratories. He moved to Lakeland, Fla., for retirement where he enjoyed his status as the oldest member of the Prop Buster’s Model Airplane Club.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ellen (Haines) Hagerman, and two sons, Monte and Bruce, all of Lakeland, Fla.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 22, at the home of his son, Bruce Hagerman, 6204 Magnolia Lane, Lakeland, Fla., 33810.
