OBITUARIES

Harold Fishbain

Harold Fishbain, M.D., died peacefully on Sept. 13, at Greene Memorial Hospital with his family at his side.

He was born in Chicago on Nov. 12, 1923, and spent his early years in Racine, Wis. Harold graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1949 and served as a first lieutenant in the Army Medical Corp 1951–1952. He spent the next 16 years as a family practitioner in Springfield, where he maintained a busy practice.

In 1968 Harold and his family moved to Atlanta, where he completed a residency in psychiatry at Emory University. Returning to Springfield he became the medical director of the Clark County Mental Health Program, working in that capacity for eight years. He came to Greene Memorial Hospital in 1979, where he became the psychiatric director of the newly created mental health unit. During those years he also served two terms as chief of staff of the hospital.

After “retiring” Harold did additional work in the Wright State University Department of Psychiatry, teaching medical students and residents at Good Samaritan Hospital for two years. He was a consultant for more than 15 years at Adriel School in West Liberty, Ohio, and spent his final years in practice working at Mental Health Services of Logan & Champaign Counties (now CCI).

Overall Harold practiced for more than 50 years and was widely known and admired for his diagnostic skills as a physician and his tremendous gifts and abilities as a psychiatrist. He received numerous awards and recognitions over the years. He was especially honored to be selected as the recipient of “Psychiatrist of the Year” by the Ohio NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) where he was recognized for his commitment and advocacy for those suffering from mental illness.

At the time of his death he was active on the boards of the Xenia YMCA, The Community Network Mental Health Board, and the Greene Foundation of Greene Memorial Hospital. He has been an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship for 12 years.

Harold was a voracious reader, a wonderful storyteller, a lover of life and a great humanitarian. He was ever patient, wise and kind, and well-loved by all who came to know him. He advocated “growing old gracefully” which he practiced every day to the last day of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Joy, whom he married in 1981; and his children, Nancy and Wendell Lutz, Tucson, Ariz.; Larry Fishbain, Lincoln, Calif.; Mark and Geanie Fishbain, Seattle, Wash; Joel and Kathi Fishbain, Silver Spring, Md.; and Ben Fishbain, Dayton. He has two grandsons, Steven and Michael Fishbain; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerome and Janet Fishbain, Madison, Wis.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte and Jerry Baum, Israel.

A memorial service will be held in the Glen Helen Building at 405 Corry Street in Yellow Springs at 2 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 23. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Xenia YMCA, 135 East Church Street, Xenia, OH 45385 or to the Y.S.
