Mallory Couillard
Mallory Couillard died Oct. 22 of breast cancer at
the Twin Oaks Care Center in Mansfield, Ohio. She was 65.
Mally, born in 1942, moved with her family from Minnesota
to Yellow Springs when she was six weeks old. Her father was working
at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base during the Second World War. Because
of her symptoms, Mally attended the Antioch Nursery School only because
a student was assigned to her. Later, she attended special schools and
institutes, including the Menninger Foundation, where her brain damage
was diagnosed. After a few years of speech training at the Institute
of Logopedics in Wichita, in the 1950s she became a resident at the
Columbus State Institution.
She was very happy to move to the Twin Oaks Living
and Learning Center in the late 1970s. In her childhood and adolescence
she loved catching frogs and was good at artwork. During her years in
Mansfield, Mally enjoyed working at Richland New Hope Industries (where
one of her first jobs was removing wires from telephones which “normal”
people had installed incorrectly) and riding at the Raemelton Therapeutic
Equestrian Center. She also enjoyed the Mansfield Carousel and Kingwood
Center duck pond. She loved and remembered her family. Mally’s
sweet nature endeared her to many.
Mally was predeceased by her parents, “Pat”
and Jarvis Couillard; her brother-in-law, Bill Alexander; and her aunt
and uncle, Don and “Mimi” Murtha.
She will be especially missed by her sister, Julie
Couillard Alexander, of Kilworthy, Ontario, Canada; and also leaves
two nephews and several cousins.
Her ashes will be interred in Minneapolis. Memorial
gifts may be made to your local therapeutic riding center or a cancer
program of your choice.
