Girls varsity basketball beats Jefferson
After winning a home game against Jefferson last week, the Lady Bulldogs dropped two on the road, at Belmont last Saturday and at Troy Christian on Monday. Their season record now stands at 4–5.
In their 56–40 defeat of Jefferson, Yellow Springs went ahead 18–11 after the first quarter and never lost the lead. Scoring leaders were Alex Beer with 21 points, Maryah Martin with 13 points and five assists, and Angela Allen with eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
The Lady Bulldogs went on to lose a close battle against Belmont, 37–35. The scoring was back and forth throughout the game with Yellow Springs holding the largest lead of the evening č a five-point edge they couldn’t maintain. In the loss, Martin had 17 points, six rebounds and two assists, Kennedy Harshaw had five points, and Brianna Ayers added four.
Yellow Springs dropped a close game against conference rival Troy Christian by a final score of 35–30. While early in the season the Lady Bulldogs won by three points, this time they lost by five. The team was led by Martin with 14 points, Lois Miller with six points and nine rebounds and Beer contributed five points.
Individual swimmers win at Shawnee
At the Shawnee Invitational held at Wittenberg University last Friday, several Yellow Springs swimmers had winning individual performances, while team relays placed fifth and four overall.
Elizabeth Malone and Erika Chick both had winning races at the meet. Malone took first in the 200-yard free stroke and third in the 100-yard free stroke, while Chick won the 100-yard fly stroke and was the runner-up in 100-yard back stroke. Rachel Meyer also had a solid performance, coming in sixth in the 500-yard free stroke.
The girls medley relay team, consisting of Chick, Malone, Meyer and Zoey McKinley, placed fifth at the meet, while the same swimmers came in fourth in the 200-yard free relay. The meet was preparation for the largest high school meet in the country next weekend, starting at the Washington Township Recreation Center on Saturday.
Boys varsity basketball loses to Stivers
Last week the YSHS boys varsity basketball team traveled to Stivers, losing 80–50 in the contest. The Bulldogs kept the game tight in the first quarter before being outscored 25–9 in the second quarter for a 41–24 deficit by the half. Leading scoring for the Bulldogs was Tyler Bruntz with 22 points and Devin Massie with nine points. Cole Edwards had five points, Roland Newsome contributed four and Greg Felder had three. Their season record now stands at 1–3.
Close losses for McKinney girls
The McKinney girls basketball team lost a close contest at Miami Valley last Saturday by a final score of 16–19. Jalyn Roe led scoring with five points, Ashley Longshaw and Kara Edwards each had four points, Sophie Davidson hit two free throws and Hypatia McLellan contributed a free throw. At Middletown Christian, poor defensive play led to a 28–12 loss. Edwards had seven points for the Lady Bulldogs, while Molly Hendrickson contributed three points and Davidson had two points.
Eighth-grade boys remain undefeated
The McKinney eighth-grade boys basketball team won three games on the road to improve their record to 5–0 on the season. In a 39—-–27 win at Miami Valley School last week, Ahmad Wagner scored 20 points and Jared Scarfpin netted 10 to pace the Bulldogs to victory. Fielding Lewis added a three-pointer, while Edward Johnson, Liam Weigand and Jacob Whetsel also contributed baskets.
The next night, the Bulldogs withstood a late rally by Carroll to win 35–34. Wagner scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds. Scarfpin hit the game-winning free throw on the way to six points, and Johnson, Weigand and Ian Chick rounded out the scoring.
On Saturday, the team beat Middletown Christian in a decisive 41–10 victory. Wagner and Scarfpin again led the scoring with 10 and nine points each, respectively, while Whetsel added seven points. Theron Orme, Bryce White, Weigand and Chick also scored in the contest.
Seventh-grade boys hoops win twice, lose
The McKinney seventh-grade boys basketball team won two matches on the road while losing their first game of the year to Carroll to improve their record to 4–1 on the season and 3–0 in the conference. Against Miami Valley last week, the team won 44–34, buoyed by Rodman Allen’s 12-point performance and Isaiah Taylor, who had 10 points on the night. Thanks to rebounding and an 18–5 first quarter run, the team jumped out to an early lead, which they kept the rest of the game.
Last week at Carroll, a division II school, the Bulldogs lost 41–19. Devon Perry had nine points and nine rebounds in the game. Coming out of halftime with a 19–5 deficit, the team put up a 9–2 scoring run in the third quarter, but were unable to come out with a victory.
On Saturday at Middletown Christian, the team had a decisive 30–5 victory thanks to Taylor’s eight points and Kaner Bulter’s seven points. Their opponents couldn’t overcome a 21–0 lead at halftime or the Bulldogs’ fast break points and speed throughout the match.
