Boys two-mile relay goes to State

At the regional preliminary meet on Tuesday, May 27, the YSHS boys 4×800 relay squad qualified for State with a second place finish in 8:11.6. The girls 4×200 relay team qualified for regional finals, to be held on Saturday, May 31, as did sophomore Alexis Onfroy in the 1600-meter finals and junior Jacob GunderKline in the 3200-meter finals.

The first four places in every final advance to the regional championships, and the top eight places in every event score points. With four districts in each region, which encompasses all of the schools in southwestern Ohio, there will be 16 athletes (or relay teams) in each event at Saturday’s regional finals, which takes place on Saturday, May 31, at Welcome Stadium, beginning at 2 p.m.

At last week’s division III District meet, held on Tuesday and Saturday, May 20 and 24, the YSHS boys team finished sixth and the girl’s team took ninth out of 19 schools.

The boys 4×800 won, while the 4×400 took second place. Alexis Onfroy was third in the 1600-meter run, and Anthony Pettiford finished fourth in the 400-meter dash. Jacob GunderKline was fourth in the 3200-meter run, and Andy Peters was fifth in the 1600-meter run and Onfroy was fifth in the 800-meter event.

Brock GunderKline was seventh in the 3200-meter run, and Ryan Newsome was eighth in the high jump. The boys 4×100 relay squad was seventh, and the 4×200 squad was eighth.

For the girls at the District meet, the top performance was the 4×200 relay, which took second place. Kristen Foster also took second in the 400-meter dash. Brenda Jones was fourth in the 100-meter dash, while Melodie Wright was sixth in the 200-meter dash. Elizabeth Gonder was sixth in the 800-meter run. Gina Laurens, Jones, Foster, and Leslie Holland advanced to the District finals in the 4×400 relay.

Doubles team wins 1 at District

After winning the division II Troy Sectional tournament last week, YSHS doubles team Olivia Chen and Alex Turner advanced to the District tournament on Thursday, May 22, at Centerville High School. The Yellow Springs team beat Franklin 6–1,6–0 in the first round, and then lost 6–0,6–1 to Seven Hills from Cincinnati, who went on to finish third in the District tourney.
