Boys basketball lose first game

The YSHS boys baksetball team was sailing through the season answering to no one until the Bulldogs went up against the Cedarville Indians on Saturday, Jan. 16, and had their first loss of the season 69–49. Still, the Bulldogs improved their record to 8–1 by defeating Greenon 69–43 on Tuesday, Jan. 12, and then handing Dayton Christian a similar decision 62–48 on Friday, Jan. 15. The team then beat Emmanuel Christian 63–47 Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Against Greenon, the Bulldogs put away the game by outscoring the Knights 25–9 in the third quarter. Ryan Newsome led the game and the team with 18 points, while Will Ripley scored 10.

Against Dayton, Newsome again led the team, scoring 13 of his team-high 22 points in the first half to help build a 25–17 lead at the half. The win tied Yellow Springs for first in the Metro Buckeye Conference with Emmanuel Christian at 4-0.

Against Cedarville, the Indians shot 19 of 26 from the free-throw line and claimed game-high scorer Luke Sheridan with 25 points. Ian Wimberly put up 13 points for Yellow Springs.

Girls basketball loses one

The Lady Bulldogs fell 53–41 to Cedarville on Saturday, Jan. 16. The Indians went on a 19–5 run in the third quarter to seal the win.

Chick, Malone place at Classic meet

This past weekend Jan. 15 and 16, the YSHS swim team took on the 2010 Coaches Classic, one of the largest meets in the country with nearly 112 schools and over 3,000 swimmers participating. Yellow Springs made its mark, with Erika Chick bringing home two second-place finishes in the 200 free and the 1,650 free, and Elizabeth Malone with an eighth-place finish in the 200 butterfly.

Chick set a 30-second personal record in the 1,650 (mile) and had almost all of her 50 splits at 31 seconds in a final time of 17:17.32.

“It was the most beautifully constant swim I have ever seen,” Varsity Coach Naomi Witt said.

Chick also finished fifth in the 200 fly and seventh in the 500 free. Malone also gathered up a 10th-place finish in the 400 individual medley and a 15th place in the 100 fly.

Yellow Springs also finished many other swimmers in the preliminary races, but no others advanced to the finals.

“The team did amazing this weekend, setting new personal records right and left, despite the sleep-deprived conditions that come with a big meet like this,” Witt said.

McKinney girls go to 2–2

The McKinney girls eighth-grade basketball team went to 2–2 with a loss of 18–14 to Dayton Christian on Saturday, Jan. 16. Brianna Ayers scored 12 points, and Michaela Roe scored two. Rachele Orme and Maeve Korkin-Laughlin combined for seven rebounds and six steals. Roe and Ah’Teyonna Colquitt held back Dayton’s onslaught with relentless defense.

KTC youth ball

The sixth-grade girls lost to Cedarville 7–30. Kaliyah Fulton put up four points, Elesha Harney two, and Gracie Price one. In Blanchester on Sunday the girls got toppled 7-42. Molly Hendrickson had two points, Elesha Harvey two, Fulton two, and two free throws from Annie Welch.

The sixth-grade boys thrashed rival Cedarville 35–20 last weekend to take their record to 4–0. Devon Perry had 10 points, Rodman Allen eight. On Sunday the boys brought home a 34–15 victory. Isaiah Taylor led all scorers with 12 points.

The fifth-grade girls team fell to Cedarville 6–22, with Kaliyah Fulton shooting four points. In Sunday’s action, the team lost 6–10 to the Blanchester Eagles. Amani Wagner chipped in four points.

The fifth-grade boys took care of business Saturday by beating Cedarville 38–10. Augie Knemeyer had 26 points, Aakeem Truss 12, and Sawyer Wolfe-Hale had nine rebounds. The boys dropped to Blanchester on Sunday 19–30.

The fourth-grade boys started the day by leading to an all-boys sweep of Cedarville with a 43–15 win. Andrew Clark drilled in 24 points. Jayme Johnson contributed to the win with 12, and Fisher Lewis seven. The Bulldog boys needed extra time to vanquish Blanchester with an overtime victory 31–27. Clark was the Bulldog spark with 22 points, while Johnson helped seal a win with five blocks, 11 rebounds.
