Sydney Welton

Sydney Parker Welton died at his home in Yellow Springs on Thursday, Jan. 28. He was 91.

Sydney was born on Aug. 25, 1918, on Staten Island, N.Y., to the late Ralph Welton and Dorothy (Parker) Welton. He graduated from Acadia University in 1939 and was a professor of mathematics and chairman of the math department at Wagner College on Staten Island for 37 years. Sydney served in the Navy as a radio and radar technician.

On Dec. 28, 1943, he married Elizabeth Charity Isham in Burlington, Vt. They built their home on Lighthouse Hill on Staten Island, N.Y.

In 1983, Sydney and Betty retired to Elizabeth City, N.C., where they also built their own home. In 1999, they moved to Yellow Springs, again building their own home. During retirement, Sydney continued lifelong interests in boats and architecture, pursued painting in watercolors and traveled.

Sydney was a member of the Unitarian Fellowship of Yellow Springs. He volunteered with Home, Inc., helping the nonprofit organization build affordable homes.

Sydney is survived by his wife, Betty, his son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Michele Welton of Yellow Springs and his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Tome Leue of Ashfield, Mass. He is also survived by grandchildren Jesse Welton of Columbus, Caleb Welton of Foster City, Calif., Emily Leue of West Boyleston, Mass. and Anna Leue of Brooklyn, N.Y., by great-grandson Alexander Plumer, by brothers William Welton of Elizabeth City, N.C. and Max Welton of Brandon, Vt. and by a sister, Betty Bosley of Burlington, N.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Donald.

A memorial service will be announced in the spring. Memorial donations in Sydney’s memory may be sent to the Unitarian Fellowship of Yellow Springs building fund.
