Bulldog Sports Round-up

Tennis team bests Fairborn

After a win against Fairborn on Wednesday, April 28, the YSHS tennis team improved to 2–6 for the season. Against Fairborn, Addison Pettiford had a commanding 6–1,6–1 first singles victory against senior Chris McCauley. On court two, Isaac Haller lost to Senior Caleb Boles 5–7, 3–6. Carl Weiner also won in straight sets, eking out the first in a 7–6 tie break.

The first doubles team of Nicky Sontag and Will Turner lost in three sets, but the nail-biter was the second doubles match between Savita Bathija/Quinn Leventhal and seniors Amanda Sillaman/Kyle Knepp. Leventhal, who had just returned from a two-week hiatus, came on with a vengeance, steady at the baseline and active at the net. Bathija took advantage of an improved serve and aggressive drives, and her returns set her partner up to bring the win home at 6–3,4–6,6–4 close to 8 p.m.

Chauncey Longshaw and Jacob Hardman played for the JV squad.

Girls track takes tri-meet

YSHS senior Reini Brickson and freshman Maryah Martin led the Lady Bulldogs track team to a victory over Springfield’s Emmanuel Christian and Wayne from Huber Heights at a home meet on Wednesday, April 21. Each young lady had her feet busy in four wins. Brickson got her 24 points in the distance events; the 3200-meter run, the 1600-meter run, the 4×800-meter relay and the 4×400-meter relay. Martin picked up her two dozen points in the sprints, specifically the 100- and 200-meter dashes, the high jump and, teaming with Brickson, in the 4×400-meter relay.

Also contributing to the 4×400 win were Angela Allen and Elizabeth Gonder. Gonder, who put together 21 points for the evening, also won the 400-meter dash and ran a leg on both the 4×800 and 4×200 squads. Allen also scored big with 18 points by winning the discus and anchoring the runner-up team in the 4×100 relay with Natasha Perry, Acala Cresci and Anna Karling-Kahn and the 4×200 relay with Gonder, Cresci and Paige Evans.

Additional wins went to Karling-Kahn in the shot put and Miller in the 800.

Competing in one of the area’s biggest division track meets for select individuals at Wayne High School on Friday, April 23, freshman Lois Miller broke her own YSHS record of 12:30 in the 3200 run, which she set the previous week at Southeastern, with a time of 12:14.67 to finish 13th.

Also competing and performing well in Friday’s 41-school meet for YSHS were Martin in the high jump and Allen in the discus.

Strong show at Wayne for boys

The YSHS boys track team also competed in the select meet at Wayne HS on Friday, April 23. Chris Johnson leapt 21’2 for a fourth-place finish in the long jump, while Mario Cosey labeled himself as one of the fastest 100-meter runners in the area with a sixth-place finish (11.12). Bulldog relay teams 400 meters (Logan Norris-Sayres, Johnson, Will Rippley and Cosey) and 800 meters (Norris-Sayres, Josh Meadows, Johnson and Cosey) finished at the top of their heats with season best times.

Also competing well for the team was Antone Truss.

McKinney track win Troy invite

The McKinney track team broke two relay records and won 10 medals at the 2010 Troy Christian Invitational on Friday, May 1. The girls relay squad of AnnDee Pettiford, Michaela Roe, Rachelle Orme and Talia Boutis pushed its one-week-old 4×100-meter record back by a fraction of a second to 56.2 seconds to win that event. Just a few minutes later the same team lowered its 4×200 record by less than a second to 1:57.2 to win that event as well. Both were McKinney School records.

Second place finishes went to Boutis in the 200 (29.9), Ed Johnson in the long jump (13’9.5) and Nathan Miller in the 800 (2:28.1). Third place finishes were turned in by Taylor Beck in the discus (59’6), Michaela Roe in the 100 (13.9), Cole McNeal-Harding in the discus (82’6), Fielding Lewis in the 1600 (5:32.3) and Lewis, Miller, Chick, Johnson in the 4x400m (4:39.1).
