At the Division III regional meet in Troy on Wednesday, May 26, the YSHS boys track team qualified runners in two events to advance to the state competition next week. In the boys 100-meter dash, junior Mario Cosey fought to the tape with Anna’s Kameron Knight and finished third in 11:24 (just a hair behind Knight’s 11:23) to qualify for the state meet. He then joined teammates senior Chris Johnson, junior Josh Meadows and sophomore Logan Norris-Sayres to take third in the 4×200 relay in 1:31.79, also qualifying the foursome for state in that event.
The top four finishers in each regional event qualify to the state track and field meet, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 4 and 5, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at Ohio State University. For Division III, on Friday the preliminary running events begin at 9:30 a.m., with Cosey running at 10:25 and the relay team at 10:40. On Saturday the running finals begin at 9:30 a.m.
As a team at the regionals last weekend, the YSHS boys finished 17th out of 39 teams, among which were Minster, New Bremen and Anna in the top three spots. Chris Johnson threw the shot put 19-10.75 for ninth place, just one place beyond scoring and shy of advancing. Cosey also scored in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 22.79 in fifth place. Will Rippley scored a point in the high jump with 6’02 for eighth place, but did not qualify to the next round of competition.
For the YSHS girls, lone qualifier Lois Miller won the team’s three points by finishing sixth in the two-mile run in 12:03.08, a new school record for YSHS. That won the girls 34th place out of 42 teams, with Versailles winning the girls title, and the Miami Valley School and Xenia Christian taking second and third.
