Bulldog Sports Round-up

Patterson leads Bulldogs

Senior Nerak Patterson was the first Bulldog to cross the finish line at the YSHS track and field Friendship Invitational held in Cedarville on Saturday. Patterson, who skipped running last fall to help out the football team, ran his fastest time in almost three years while placing 35th overall out of 194 finishers. Zack McHugh came in 38th, Mitchell Brickson and Nathaniel Reed placed 44th and 47th, respectively, and Josh Meadows was 77th. Overall, the team placed seventh out of 19 schools competing, upping their season record to 61–21.

Women’s cross-country places seventh

Lois Miller and Christina Brewer led the Lady Bulldogs last Saturday at the Friendship Invitational, finishing seventh, the same as the boy’s team. Miller placed ninth overall at 21:20, while Brewer was a strong 40th out of 165 women finishing. Senior Alex Beer chipped in at 62nd, while Hannah Kumbusky placed 73rd, AnnDee Pettiford, 76th, Mary Triplett, 78th, Olivia Ramage, 83rd and Mariah Nicols, 88th.

Varsity volleyball faces hard road losses

The Lady Bulldogs volleyball team dropped away matches to Troy Christian 19–25, 23–25, 14–25, Middletown Christian 14–25, 19–25, 8–25 and Xenia Christian 26–24, 21–25, 14–25, 22–25 before prevailing at Dayton Dunbar 25–9, 25–17, 25–13. Their record now stands at 5–8.

In the Troy Christian loss last week, the team battled back to nearly win the second set with the help of Tasha Perry at nine points and seven assists, Angela Allen with five points, and three digs and Brittany Klotz, who had four points and three kills. Falling to a tough Middletown Christian team, Maya Hardman created seven points with three blocks while Klotz had five points and three kills. Against Xenia Christian, Taylor Ennis had 13 points and eight assists, with Hardman responsible for 11 points, eight blocks and six digs in the loss. In the team’s triumph over Dunbar, Perry produced 16 points and 22 assists while Ennis and Hardman each had 10 points and Jenna Boettcher came in with nine kills.

JV volleyball prevails in three of four

After losing to Troy Christian 11–25, 23–-25 early last week, the junior varsity volleyball team went on to beat Middletown Christian 25–18, 18–25, 23–25, Xenia Christian 25-17, 24–26, 25–21 and Dunbar 25–13, 25–22, improving their record to 5–6 on the season. Mychael Roberts contributed five points, while Kennedy Harshaw had four blocks and two passes aced in the Troy Christian loss. Roberts had 20 points against Middletown Christian and 10 versus Dunbar, while Stephanie Marion contributed 10 assists and 11 points and Harshaw came in at 12 points and eight kills at Xenia Christian.

Golf team dominates leader board

On Wednesday, Sept. 15, the Yellow Springs High School golf team hosted Meadowdale at its home course, prevailing by a score of 218–258. Carl Wiener posted the best round of the day between both teams at 39, with Yellow Springs golfers taking four of the five top spots on the leader board. Also finishing with low scores were Zeb Reichert at 52, Taylor Beck at 62 and Zoey McKinley with a 65 over nine holes.

Earlier this week, the team defeated Emmanuel Christian at Reid South golf course 204–226. At the match, Wiener shot a 45, Reichert and Orme both posted a 49, Camara Cross had a 61 and Beck and McKinley both came in at 70.

Boys soccer hosts homecoming

Since there is no high school football this year, the Yellow Springs High School homecoming game will be the boys soccer match against Xenia Christian on Thursday, Sept. 23.

Fielding Lewis wins McKinney invite

After two recent second-place finishes, Fielding Lewis finally took the gold at the McKinney Friendship Invitational held in Cedarville last Saturday, beating his own record by eight seconds with a final time of 11:30. He triumphed over 174 other runners, including some of the best 7th- and 8th-grade runners in the Dayton-Springfield area. Lewis overcame a final challenge in the last 300 meters, when he briefly lost the lead, only to sprint to the finish line and edge out a victory. Edward Johnson came in 24th, Sam Crawford placed 93rd and Oluka Okia got 103rd in the team’s eighth-place finish out of 15 schools represented, advancing their record to 25–17.

Wagner tallies three TDs for McKinney

In a loss for the McKinney football team at Sydney Lehman last Thursday 32–18, Ahmad Wagner ran for 218 yards in just nine rushes for an average of 24 yards per carry, contributing all three of the team’s touchdowns. He also made 10 tackles on the day. Bryce White had four rushes for 17 yards and three tackles. Morgan Beard supplied 5.5 tackles with a quarterback sack and Zane Pergram contributed eight tackles. The team’s next match is Thursday, Sept. 23, at Fort Loramie.

McKinney volleyball victorious

The 7th-grade McKinney Middle School volleyball team lost the home opener to Xenia Christian 25–22, 25–20 before defeating Troy Christian in straight sets 25–20, 25–23 and overcoming Emmanuel Christian 25–20, 25–23. The team finished league play with a 3–1 record (4–2 total), with two more out-of-league matches to play.

Against a feisty Xenia Christian team, the Lady Bulldogs were led by number one Madison Robinson with eight points, two aces and two kills, Jalyn Roe with seven points, three aces and one assist, and Molly Brown with three points, one ace and two assists in the home loss. Prevailing against Troy Christian at home, Brown had nine points, three aces and two assists, number one Robinson contributed nine points, three aces and two kills and Callie Dillon had six points, two aces and two assists. In its triumph over a much improved Emmanuel Christian, Roe had 11 points, three aces and one kill, number 16 Madison Robinson produced eight points and three aces and Madeline Nielsen had four points with one kill.
