Chick 3rd, Malone 4th at state

Junior swimmers Erika Chick and Elizabeth Malone ended a season of winning swims and personal bests at the Division II Ohio High School Swimming Championships in Canton last Friday. Chick took third and fifth in her events, while Malone came away with fourth and 12th place finishes. Their combined score of 50 points was enough put them in 17th place out of 56 teams by the tournment’s end.

Chick finished the 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.60 to bring home her third bronze medal in two years. She swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.34 for a fifth-place finish. Malone swam the fastest 100-yard butterfly of her career, in 57.41, which was good enough for fourth place. Her 200-yard individual medley time of 2:10.35 resulted in a 12th-place finish. It was Malone’s top finish since coming in fifth in the state tournament for the 100-yard butterfly as a freshman.

At the district tournament last month, the swimmers clinched three titles among them. Chick set a new meet record for the 200-yard freestyle and also won the 500-yard freestyle. Malone grabbed the title for the 100-yard butterfly and cruised to sixth in the 200-yard individual medley. The team’s 200-yard medley relay team of Chick, Malone, Zoey McKinley and Rachel Meyer placed 21st at districts.
