Claris Lewis

Claris was born in Range, Ohio, in Madison County on April 6, 1925, and lived in the Yellow Springs area for the last 70 years. Claris was a mother whose three children were born at home, and a homemaker, and always had an open house and heart for anyone in need. She also was the entire office staff for her husband’s excavating business for over 40 years, working by his side up until the time of his death 10 years ago. She was the last surviving member of of both her and her husband’s immediate family, and had become the matriarch of both, known by many and loved by all.

Claris was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, R. H. “Red” Lewis, her parents, Robert and Daisy (Hollis) Alspaugh, sister, Donna Dunston and brother, William Alspaugh. She is survived by her sons, Donald E. Lewis and Ronald L. (Brenda) Lewis, daughter, Norma G. Lewis, four grandchildren, Ronald C. (Amy) Lewis, Travis (Wren) Lewis, Christy (Brendan) Comerford and Cori (Jared) Whittaker, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Claris also leaves behind her very dear sister-in-law, Janice (Steve) Strayor, along with numerous friends of all ages. She will also be greatly missed by her favorite grand-dog, Velvet. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked memorial contributions to be made to Hospice of Dayton. Services were held Monday, April 2, at Jackson Lytle and Lewis Funeral Home Yellow Springs Chapel with Pastor Kenneth Moore officiating. Interment followed at Glen Forest Cemetery.
