Edwin Staiger

Edwin Paul Staiger of Fairborn died unexpectedly at his home after a brief illness on Tuesday, Nov. 6. He was 83.
Ed was born on May 5, 1929 to the late William and Esther Staiger of Bucyrus, Ohio. He graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1947, where he lettered in baseball. His baseball talent led him to a tryout with the Chicago Cubs. Ed coached many youth baseball teams and played in church softball leagues. He was instrumental in starting and organizing the boys Babe Ruth baseball league in Fairborn. Ed spent his career as a graphic artist for 35 years in the Air Force Orientation Group, or AFOG, at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, Ala. and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He also enjoyed a part-time job as a real estate agent for a number of years. Ed was an avid sports fan, especially rooting for Ohio’s college and professional teams. He was a lifelong Lutheran who dedicated many volunteer hours to the church using his art talent.
He leaves behind his wife, Barbara Rose (Kopke) Staiger of 16 years; his two sons, Alan Staiger of Yellow Springs and Timothy Staiger of Chocowinity, N.C.; daughter-in-law Carla Staiger; his grandchild, Jeanette Hales; and great-grandchildren, Cameryn, Caitlin and Cierra, all of Washington, N.C. and nephew Greg Shumaker of Charlotte, NC. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Fay (Nye) Staiger.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Abiding Christ Lutheran Church in Fairborn. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in his memory to the The V.
