McKinney takes top writing honors

McKinney Middle School students took several top honors at the annual Power of the Pen District Tournament held on Saturday, Feb. 2, at YSHS. Power of the Pen is a series of interscholastic writing competitions designed for students in grades seven and eight. Ten schools participated, representing seven counties.

Students wrote three stories in response to specific prompts in three separate rounds. When the judging was complete, McKinney placed as follows: first place, seventh-grade team award; second place, eighth-grade team award; eighth-grade best of round awards went to Baer Wright and Jack Lewis; a seventh-grade honorable mention went to Peter Day; seventh-grade individual awards went to Solene Roullier (fourth place), Aidan Hackett (fifth place) and Greta Kramer (seventh place); and eighth-grade individual awards went to Duard Headley (fifth place), and Baer Wright (first place).

All of the McKinney students performed exceptionally well. Their teacher and mentor, Ms. Aurelia Blake, couldn’t have been prouder. Next stop, regionals on March 23, and then on to state!
