Yellow Springs strings sing out together

Yellow Springs’ string players of all age and creed joined together Wednesday night at the Yellow Springs High School gym in an impromptu performance to celebrate their common love of music. Under conductors Shirley Mullins and Dennis Farmer, close to 75 people representing the Yellow Springs Strings, Yellow Springs Chamber Orchestra, the McKinney and Yellow Springs High School orchestras, and alumni and friends played a short program of folk tunes, arrangements by composers Smetana, Bach and William Hofeldt.

Two solo student groups also took to the stage, including Francesca Brecha, Alex Kellogg and Anna Williamson, playing a movement from Bach’s Double Concerto. Sam Crawford, Sam Holman-Smith and Blaze Wright arranged and modernized a German folk tune for bass, cello and violin, which they plucked to everyone’s delight.

A similar event involving current and past community and student band members will be held at YSHS on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m.
