Bike and Build returns to village

For the next few days, volunteers from the group Bike and Build Inc. will visit Yellow Springs and  work with Home, Inc. on affordable housing projects. Bike and Build is a nonprofit group that rallies young adults to cycle across the country, working to support affordable efforts through grants and volunteer work and raising awareness. Nearly 30 Bike and Build volunteers will cycle from Columbus today, and will donate more than 65 volunteer hours in just one day at 10 homes throughout the village. Antioch College Student Life will host the Bike and Build crew overnight; Antioch College hosted a group of more than 30 Bike and Build volunteers last summer as well.

While in the village, Bike and Build volunteers will work on homes on Xenia Avenue, West Davis Street, in Thistle Creek and on Dayton Street, painting, caulking, landscaping and relocating a shed. Tonight, the riders will dine with Antioch College students at the dining hall, enjoying presentations on Bike and Build’s mission and affordability issues in the village.

Yellow Springs is one of the many destinations to which the crew will travel over the summer.  One of nine summer routes across America, the visiting crew is biking from Maine to Santa Barbara, Calif. in a 77 day long journey, all on bicycle — that’s nearly 4,000 miles to promote affordable housing in America.
