Margaret McColaugh Lease
- Published: February 20, 2014
Margaret McColaugh Lease died peacefully at Springfield Regional Hospital on Feb. 17, following a serious stroke. She was 87.
Margaret was born in Dayton on July 17, 1926, to Ella and Samuel Mains. She had an older brother, Samuel, and an older sister, Betty. She fell in love with a fellow she met on a blind date and married Earl Leroy McColaugh on Valentine’s Day in 1947. Earl and Margaret had two children, Stephen and Debbie McColaugh, who now reside in Yellow Springs.
Margaret was a lively and engaging soul who loved to sing and dance. In the 1940s, she was a singer with various Dayton and Cincinnati big bands. She sang on numerous radio shows on WLW radio and was a regular soloist in her church choir.
Family was extremely important to Margaret. She was generous to a fault, and took advantage of every gift-giving and card-sending occasion she could find.
Margaret loved animals and had a huge heart for others who were in need. She was an inveterate donor to causes large and small that pertained to the care of animals and the less fortunate.
She is survived by her daughter and granddaughter, Debbie McColaugh and Jennifer Robinow; her son and daughter-in-law, Stephen McColaugh and Kate LeVesconte; and grandsons Will and Chris LeVesconte, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of grand-relatives.
Margaret’s family will sorely miss her infectious laugh and joyous soul. A private graveside service will be held Thursday, Feb. 20, in Bowersville, Ohio, and an open memorial gathering will be planned for the springtime. Memorial gifts can be made to either the Humane Society of Greene County or Oesterlen Services for Youth.
