William Ronald (Ron) Parrill Sr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 6, at Friends Care Community in Yellow Springs. He was 87.
Born Oct. 30, 1927, in South Vienna, Ohio, to Forest (Doc) and Kathryn (Nagel) Parrill, Ron was one of 15 children and lived most of his life in Springfield. A military veteran, Ron’s career in visual merchandising began at Wren’s Department Store, where he worked for more than 30 years. If you walked throughout the store years ago, you probably saw his work on a regular basis. His passion was setting up the Christmas window display at the corner of Second and Main streets. It enthralled children and adults a like, who remember the magic he created with his skills, his sense of humor and his love of the holidays.
Later in his career, he accepted a fantastic opportunity to move to the east coast and work for Lord and Taylor Department Store in New York City, and he retired from there in 1992. Ron carried his fondness for visual merchandising into decorating his home, especially at Christmas time.
Ron is survived by two sons, William Parrill Jr. (Cindy) and Scott Parrill (Donna); one daughter, Lisa Mueller (Richard); two granddaughters, Melissa Venrick (Glenn) and Ashley Snell (Brian); one grandson, Christopher Parrill (Kristy); one great-granddaughter, (Graysen Venrick; two great-grandsons, Gage Venrick and Ian Snell; two sisters, Patricia (Harry) Downing and Kathryn Shipley; and several nieces and nephews.
Ron was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ethel (Foulke) Parrill; his youngest son, Craig Parrill; his parents and 12 brothers and sisters. A heartfelt “thank you” to Judy Peck for being Ron’s companion and caregiver for the past four-and-a-half years.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Jones-Kenney-Zechman Funeral Home, with Pastor Richard McDaniel officiating. Burial followed in Enon Cemetery.
