The Yellow Springs Board of Education decided at 9:30 p.m. this evening to close schools Thursday, Feb. 19 due to snow, extreme cold and slick roadway conditions.

As of 9:30 p.m., the Antioch School and the Children’s Center have not yet indicated a change in schedule.

The combination of snow and sub-freezing surface temperatures could result in slick spots on area roadways this morning. Most of the slick spots will likely be on secondary untreated and less traveled roadways, parking lots and sidewalks.

Please check with your school or organizing individuals for cancellations or delays of after-school activities. There have been many cancellations already.

The National Weather Service states that there is a slight chance of snow Wednesday evening, with temperatures dropping to a low of -6°F. Thursday will bring a 30% chance of snow showers in the afternoon with minimal accumulation and high temperatures of 3°F. Wind chill values can dip as low as -25°F, with winds from 11 to 16 mph and gusts reaching 26 mph.

Evening forecast shows clear skies with a dramatic drop in temperature to -12°F. Even though light winds are forecast, wind chill values can dip as low as -20°F.

Frostbite:
In current frigid temperatures, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in 10 minutes or less of exposure. Stay indoors or cover up exposed skin if venturing outside.

Welfare checks:
Roadways and walkways are icy; Village police and Miami Township Fire Rescue will make rounds to check on people with known care issues. If you are concerned about someone’s welfare, please call the police so that they may check on them.

If you have no heat or are suffering from exposure-related issues, call 911. Please note that it is illegal for electric and gas providers to turn off services if the temperature falls below freezing.

Frozen water pipes:
Please note that broken water pipes are a major issue during cold snaps. Protect your pipes from freezing by:
• insulating pipes that are exposed to outside temperatures;
• closing all foundation vents under the house;
• opening cabinets under sinks to let warm air circulate

Never leave a building unheated during freezing temperatures unless all water lines, drains and toilets have been properly drained. If a water line breaks, it is important to shut off the valve within your house or at the meter.
