Ethel Lee Bender

Ethel Lee Bender

Ethel Lee Rembert Bender was born on September 15, 1932 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. to her joyful parents, Jule and Mary Rembert.

She attended elementary, junior high and high school and then completed her educational journey at Tennessee State University where she received her bachelor’s degree. Upon graduation, Ethel went to work as the Secretary to the Dean of Knoxville College, where she met the love of her life, Jonas Elbert Bender.

They were joined together in holy matrimony on Aug. 25, 1956, in a double wedding with her sister, Rosa Cochrane, that was so spectacular that it was featured in JET magazine.

To their union were born two children whom she always nurtured and cherished, Jerri Elise Bender Harrison and Michael Jerome Bender.

Elthel loved children and she loved Yellow Springs, and so she became a dedicated teacher and poured so much knowledge and wisdom, not only into her own children, but also into so many of the children here in Yellow Springs through the years.

She loved the Lord and was a dedicated member at Central Chapel A.M.E. Church. The God that she loved and served called her home from labor to reward on Sunday, April 23, 2017, and now she rests in His loving arms!

She leaves to mourn her passing, Jonas Bender (husband); Jerri Harrison/Peyton (daughter); Michael Bender/Tammy (son); Brandon Harrison/Starlette (grandson); Jordan Harrison (grandson); Adam Bender (grandson); Ryan Bender (grandson); Judah Harrison (great grandson); Micah Harrison (great grandson); and a host of family and friends who will always cherish her precious memory.

Service for Ethel Bender will be held on Friday, April 28, at Central A.M.E Church. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. until time of service at noon, with Pastor Dwight Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Glen Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central Chapel A.M.E Church. Arrangements entrusted to Porter-Qualls-Robinson Funeral Home.
