Pirates an early winner

The 2018 Major League rec baseball season opened Saturday, June 2, with the Sunrise Café Indians taking an 18–12 victory over the Yellow Springs Toy Company Pirates. The Pirates out-hit the Indians 7–5 and trailed by only one, 6–5 after four innings, but then gave up nine runs in the fifth. Indians pitchers Jake Ortiz-Thornton, Mateo Basora and Kian Rainey combined for eight strike-outs and 12 walks. 

Meanwhile, Basora led the Indians on offense, scoring three runs off a pair of walks and a base hit. Ortiz Thornton, Luka Sage-Frabotta, Sophie Lawson and Jack Horvath also each scored twice. The Pirates were paced by Dylan Reed, Josh Clark, J.P. Anderson and Violet Babb who all went one-for-two at the plate and scored twice as did Derek Reed after being hit by a pitch and a pair of walks. Hazen VanMeter and Josephine Zinger both went one-for-three and scored once. 

Visit the league website at http://www.ysbaseball.org for results of this past Monday’s game when the Adoption Link Braves hosted the Yellow Springs Toy Company Pirates.  The Sunrise Café Indians will return to the field to host the Adoption Link Braves. 

Major League games are played on Saturday, Monday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM. The 2018 Minor League season opens this coming Saturday, June 9, at 10 a.m. when the Tom’s Market Pirates host the Peach’s Dodgers. See the league website for the latest scores and schedule.
