Volunteers are needed to donate and put together basic supplies, like bottled water and snacks, for people seeking asylum.

Donate supplies, volunteer effort to asylum seekers

Volunteers from Yellow Springs, as well as Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Youngstown, are now organizing to put together bags of food, fruit, basic hygiene items and more for asylum-seeking immigrants coming from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. These immigrants are placed on buses in border towns and sent north to stay with sponsors or family members, and volunteers are working to meet them at Greyhound stations and offer these bags of goods, as well as to help with connections missed and rebooking of tickets when buses are late.

In order to prepare the bags, volunteers are needed to donate items and to help pack the bags. A gift bagging party will be held on Sunday, Sept. 15, 1–3 p.m. at Rockford Chapel on the Antioch College campus.

Specific items needed are as follows: bottles of water, prepackaged tuna or chicken salad with crackers, small packages of cheese crackers, granola and protein bars, napkins and utensils, boxes or pouches of juice or shelf-stable milk, applesauce or fruit cups with spoon, diapers, wet wipes, baby food pouches, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, hand sanitizer or antibacterial hand wipes, washcloths, small soaps and feminine hygiene pads.

Those who would like to donate are asked to pick one or two of the listed items and provide enough to fill 20 bags with several of each individual item. Items may be dropped off at Rockford Chapel on the day of the gift bagging party, or those donating may stay to help bag the items. Cash donations are also welcomed.

One Response to “Donate supplies, volunteer effort to asylum seekers”

  1. Don Hubschman says:

These supplies would no doubt serve a greater good to humanity if they are directed to the hurricane ravaged Bahamas. But I guess that wouldn’t make a political statement, would it? #priorities
