Herbert Calvin Thomas Jr.

Herbert Calvin Thomas Jr., 63, of Urbana, Ohio, died on Nov. 17, 2021, at Maria Joseph Center in Dayton, Ohio. Born on Oct. 12, 1958, to parents Herbert C. Thomas Sr. and Maria Mercedes Thomas in Urbana, Herb was a beloved son, husband, father and grandfather.

Growing up, Herb loved music, sports, learning and traveling to visit his mother’s family in Guadalajara, Mexico. He graduated from Urbana High School in 1977. Prior to graduation, he was a proud member of the Hillclimbers football team. He attended Florida A&M University and was a graduate of Clark Technical College, where he was a part of the basketball team.

Herb was a retired assistant to the Ohio State Auditor and worked part time as a jeweler. He was an active member of his church, St. Mary’s in Urbana, until his health declined. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and sang in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church choir. Herb enjoyed watching his favorite football teams, the Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes, playing the saxophone, listening to Dayton funk music, visiting his family and enjoying the occasional strawberry milkshake.

  Herb is survived by his father, Herbert Calvin Thomas Sr.; siblings, Maria (Dan) Jones and Homer Byron Thomas; two daughters, Jessica (Matt) Thomas-Raska and Julia Thomas; niece and nephew, Monica and Matthew Jones; and grandchild, Calliope Raska. He was preceded in death by his mother, Maria Mercedes Thomas, and his wife Oleta Thomas.
