By John Gudgel

Yellow Springs High School 2023 graduating senior Malcolm Blunt capped off his stellar track career by earning a medal with a seventh-place finish in the 200 meters at the Division III state track meet held at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University on Friday, June 2, and Saturday June 3.

Eighteen runners stepped to the line during Friday’s preliminaries with only the top nine advancing to the finals on Saturday. Blunt was the ninth-place finisher in the preliminaries and thus earned a spot in the finals.

During the 200-meter finals on Saturday, Blunt was positioned in lane 9, got out fast in the first turn and ran a furious race down the homestretch, catching several runners and just missing sixth place by one hundredth of a second. His time of 22.41 seconds was a personal best.

Blunt became the first YSHS runner to earn a medal in the 200 meters at the state meet since 1997.

Blunt also competed in the long jump competition on Friday, June 2.  He placed 15th, leaping 19’11’’.

Coaches Isabelle Dierauer, Peter Dierauer and John Gudgel focused on the technical aspects of Blunt’s events leading up to the state meet. Blunt’s focus and attention to detail proved to be the key to his success during districts, regionals and all the way to the state meet. Blunt plans to compete in track at Tennessee State University, where he will be a freshman in the fall.
