BASKETBALL
Two losses, a win as boys open season
The Yellow Springs High School boys varsity basketball team began its season with three nonconference games, starting off with a narrow 51–53 loss to Graham High School in nonconference play on Friday, Dec. 1.
Senior Jake Ortiz-Thornton and freshman Mason Cline led the team in scoring, netting 14 and 12 points respectively; seniors Otto Cipollini and Sam Miller brought in eight points each, followed by seven from senior Antonio Chaiten and two from junior Landon Harris. Cline and Cipollini led for rebounds, with eight each, and Harris and Miller each netted an assist during the game.
The boys suffered another loss, 20–53, against Newton High School Saturday, Dec. 2, but followed the game up with a 58–52 win against Tri-County North on Tuesday, Dec. 5; individual stats for these two match-ups have not yet been reported by the teams.
The team’s season record currently stands at 1–2.
BOWLING
Boys start with two wins, one loss
The Yellow Springs High School boys bowling team began the season with a nonconference win against Dayton Dunbar on Thursday, Nov. 30, 1,777 pins to 1,258. The team fell to conference rivals Dayton Christian on Friday, Dec. 1, 1,718 to 2,068, but won out in conference play on Monday, Dec. 4, against Legacy Christian Academy, 1,845 to 1,802.
In the match against Dayton Christian, junior Stephon Royalston led the team with an average score of 166.5 across two games, with sophomore Noah Diamond following closely at an average of 158.5.
Bringing the victory over Legacy, sophomore Jaxyn Fletcher racked up an impressive average of 193, followed by Diamond with 188.
Individual stats for the Nov. 30 match were not available at press time.
The boys season record stands at 2–1, with a conference record of 1–1.
The girls bowling team will kick off its season Thursday, Dec. 14.
