CROSS-COUNTRY
Good showing at first meet
Running in their first meet of the year, the McKinney and YS High School cross-country teams competed at the Dixie Invitational last week. All of the races were competed at a distance of 3,200 meters.
The YSHS girls team, with a mix of new and veteran runners, ran to a third-place finish out of a competitive field of 10 teams.
Senior Sasi Drees earned a 10th place-medal (14:59) while fellow seniors Rebecca DeWine (20th) and Lauren Finney (25th) ran solid races. Sierra Sundell-Turner (29th), Hannah Finney (33rd), Ella Reardon (36th) and Bella Thomas (37th) added to the team scoring.
The high school boys finished in seventh place out of 11 schools; with a squad of 11 runners, the boys will be very competitive this season.
Kyle Johnston, who qualified for regionals last year, showed that he will be a force to be reckoned with as he ran to a runner-up (10:33) finish. Junior Will Oberg (17th) and sophomore Matteo Chaiten (39th) ran competitive races. A tight-knit group of Arthur DeVore (42nd), Oskar Dennis (48th), Graham Turnmire (49th), Brodan Chafee (61st), Trevor Roberts (64th), Robin Douglass (65th) and Adrian Benedict (75th) rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
The YS boys middle school team ran to a fifth-place finish in a field of seven teams. With a squad of six runners, the young pups show a lot of promise for this season. Eighth graders William DeWine (23rd) and Charlie Rizer (34th) ran great races. They were complemented by the Bulldog pack of Gaven Collier (40th), Cody McClure (41st), Sam Norman (45th) and John Nowak (46th).
The YS girls middle school squad only had two runners at Dixie — however, they ran exceptionally well in the field of 28 runners. Eighth graders Lilly Brown (15th) and Winona Dean (16th) are primed for a great year.
Coaches Dave Johnston, Isabelle Dierauer and John Gudgel commented on the great efforts that were produced by the Bulldogs, with many of the runners already at mid-season form.
At press time, the Bulldogs were set to run Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Fairborn Invitational.
