Youth basketball signups open, volunteers sought

Sign-ups are now open for the community youth recreational basketball league, serving Yellow Springs and surrounding areas. In the first 48 hours after opening registration, organizers logged nearly 50 registrations.
The league is open free of charge to children in preschool through sixth grade. Last season — the first held after the pandemic pause — more than 90 players ages 4 through sixth grade took part, and organizers hope to maintain strong numbers while raising the level of play.
“Athletics teach so much more than just the sport,” organizers said in a press release. “We want to get our youngest Mills Lawn students hooked with a love of the game so they continue to play through junior high and high school.”
The league is volunteer-run, with coaches, referees, scorekeepers and team organizers all drawn from the community. Those interested in helping may email ysyouthbulldogbball@gmail.com or contact Emily Berlo at Mills Lawn.
The season will run Jan. 5–March 7. Pre-K/K programming will be drop-in style once per week. Grades 1–4 will practice once weekly and play one game weekly; grades 5–6 may practice twice a week, with one game weekly. If participation is high enough, divisions will be separated by grade and gender.
Games for grades 1–4 will be Saturday mornings, primarily at the Bryan Center. Grades 5 and 6 are expected to play some games against other school districts.
The program is free, though donations are accepted. Registration may be completed online at http://www.bit.ly/YSYouthBasketballRegister2526.
