Girls basketball wins 1, loses 2

Rapheal Allen revved the Bulldogs up with layups early in the first quarter to pull the team out of an initial slump towards an eventual 57–37 stampede over the Troy Christian Eagles on Friday, Dec. 19.

The YSHS Lady Bulldogs lost to Troy Christian 52–38 on Thursday, Dec. 18, before serving up a whopping victory of 74–15 against Emmanuel Christian on Saturday, Dec. 20. Yellow Springs then lost to Fairborn, 78–46, on Monday, Dec. 22.

The Lady Bulldogs showed true grit against a strong Troy Christian team, who went up 19–17 just before the half time break. But the Lady Bulldogs lost several unforced turnovers, and with a short bench and a young team, Yellow Springs was running out of gas by the fourth quarter. Troy Christian outscored Yellow Springs in the second half, 33 to 21. Ashanta Robinson led the team with 20 points, and Stephanie Scott scored 12 points and eight rebounds.

Yellow Springs regained its confidence against Emmanuel Christian. Taking control from the outset, the Lady ’Dogs shut Emmanuel down for the entire first quarter and by the half time, Yellow Springs was up 33–3. Yellow Springs used good half court defense and strong shooting and rebounding to outscore the Lady Lions in the second half 41–12. Robinson ended up with 30 points, and Scott had her second triple double of the season with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 15 steals. She needed just two more rebounds for a quadruple double.

Fairborn had too much height, too much depth, and caused too many fouls for Bulldog post players to let Yellow Springs in the game. The Bulldogs kept up 15–13 in the first quarter, but soon fell under the Skyhawks’ front line of girls who stood 6’ 1”, 6’ 2” and 5’ 11”. Fairborn’s three-point shooting and inside presence took a toll on Yellow Springs. Robinson led the team with 20 points, while Scott had 19.

Boys basketball wins two

YSHS basketball got a shot in the arm this week at home when the team beat Troy Christian 57–37 on Friday, Dec. 19, and then flattened Greenon 66–46 the following day.

Yellow Springs held Troy to zero points in the second quarter while scoring 14, and outscored Troy 16–9 in the final period to seal their lead. The Bulldogs had eight three-pointers by Ryan Newsome, Kevin Sikes-Gilbert, Ian Wimberly and Marques Greene. Sikes-Gilbert had the game high 17 points, followed by Newsome with 15.

Against Greenon, the Bulldogs outscored the Knights 19–9 in the second quarter and 23–5 in the third, and called the game a done deal. Newsome led the team with 16 points, while Wimberly had 10, Raphael Allen had 9 and Joe Fugate had 8.

Swimmers place at Greenon

The YSHS swim team competed at the Greenon Falls Invitational on Dec. 12, where Maiya Hodge won the team’s three points by finishing 10 of 44 swimmers in the 50 yard breast. She swam the event in 38.7 seconds. April Doubt, Mary Triplett and Claire Triplett also competed at the meet. The Yellow Springs team swam at the Kenton Ridge meet on Friday, Dec. 19.
