An alternative veterinary office will soon be a new business on the corner of Stafford and Union Streets, after Village Planning Commission approved at its Monday, June 8 meeting a proposal to turn an unoccupied house into a small clinic.

Since the Yellow Springs Police Department began arming its officers with Tasers in August 2008, the stun guns have been deployed seldom and according to departmental policy, Police Chief John Grote said in a recent interview.

More than 60 area youth kicked off the 2009 Yellow Springs Youth Baseball Minor League season this past weekend. In the season opener Friday, June 5, the Pirates outlasted the Dragons 16–11 in a game that saw both teams pound out 25 hits.

The McKinney School and Yellow Springs High School girls basketball program is offering open gym sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4 to 6 p.m. The sessions began Tuesday, June 23, and are open to any middle and high school girls interested in playing basketball.

Perry League, Yellow Springs’ T-ball program, opens its 2009 season Friday night, June 5, 6:30 p.m. at Gaunt Park. The village’s non-competitive beginners baseball program is open to girls and boys ages 2–9. Two- and three-year-olds are welcome if accompanied on the diamond by an adult.

Registration is still open for the Street Fair Shootout 3on3 basketball tournament during the Yellow Springs Street Fair on Saturday, June 13, at the Bryan Community Center outdoor courts. There are girls and boys divisions for grade school (up to 6th grade), middle school (7-8th) and high school (9-12th) players.

For the YSHS girls team at the Division III regional track meet on Friday, the 4×200 relay finished seventh in 1:48.66, with Ryder Comstock, Elizabeth Gonder, Brenda Jones and Melodie Wright. The same girls came in eighth in the 4×400 in 4:23.03.

A memorial service will be held for Ray Schiff on Sunday, June 7, beginning 1 p.m., at the Glen Helen Building. Schiff died on Feb. 10. He was a long time Yellow Springs resident, having come here in 1957 to work at YSI.

Most daycare centers raise their rates from 3 to 5 percent a year, according to Marlin Newell, director of the Community Children’s Center of Yellow Springs. But even in these trying economic times, the Children’s Center, which has raised rates only twice in the past five years, has decided against increasing fees.
