45 years for soccer league
- Published: October 8, 2009
Yellow Springs Soccer Inc., YSSI, will celebrate 45 years of recreational soccer and honor Joe Robinson, the founder of the YS Recreational Soccer League, with a community potluck on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Mills Lawn School auditorium. Interested individuals and families are encouraged to keep this date available and participate in the festivities.
In 1964, Joe Robinson started the soccer program that has grown into the extremely popular league of today. Presently, approximately 250 kids play recreational soccer during the fall and spring seasons. On many Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, these young soccer enthusiasts can be found playing on the community soccer fields with families and friends nearby. This program is staffed entirely by volunteers and is free to participants.
Former and current recreational soccer coaches and referees are encouraged to attend this community potluck and be recognized for their contribution to the success of this soccer program. Current and former soccer players, families and community members are encouraged to come to appreciate the others. Please bring a dish to share plus your own table service.
Interested persons who have memorabilia including photos, videos and newspaper articles of this early soccer league should contact Mike Knemeyer at 767-2920 by October 24 so that these treasures can be included in the evening’s program. To help with this event, contact Lauren Miller at 767-2072. Assistance in the set-up and clean-up for this event would be greatly appreciated. Community service hours will be granted to students who help. Please join in the celebration of one of Yellow Springs most enjoyed activities — soccer!
