Bulldog Sports round-up

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The Yellow Springs boys basketball team proved itself a contender outside the confines of the Metro Buckeye league by beating the sixth seed Springfield Catholic Central 55–53 in the Division IV sectional on Wednesday, March 3. And in an upset 40–37 loss to the fifth seeds, Franklin Monroe, on Friday, that’s where the advance stopped.

The Bulldogs, seeded third, were favored for the district finals to be held this weekend at University of Dayton arena. Against Springfield the Bulldogs were ahead by six points at the halftime, and they spread their shooting among eight able players to outscore the Irish in the last quarter and get the final word. Chris Johnson had an outstanding game, with 18 points.

But in a low-scoring game against Franklin-Monroe, the Bulldogs shooters were shut down. Yellow Springs built a 23–17 halftime lead, which shrank to 29–26 in the third quarter. And then the Jets outscored the Bulldogs 14–8 in the final period to seal their advance to the district finals.

Coach Brad Newsome told the Springfield News-Sun that the 27–6 free-throw disparity cost Yellow Springs the game.

Ryan Newsome, Ryan Phillips and Will Ripley all scored eight points for the Bulldogs, who finished 17–4.
