And they’re off!

If you saw a throng of women pouring down W. South College St. last Saturday morning and were a little confused, that was the second annual Simply Women’s 5K Run/Walk. Over a hundred women and girls competed in the fundraiser, which is a race to raise money and promote females of all ages and backgrounds participating in sports. Sorry gents, not this time; but you get plenty of sports coverage already.

Paloma Wiggins, a rising sophomore at Yellow Springs High School was the chief organizer for the event. She was concerned about a survey that illustrated a decrease in sports participation amongst high school girls. She decided to organize the race as a fundraiser and a way to promote girls and women competing in sports.

About a hundred and thirty women and girls turned up for the event. Some ran their fiercest, others jogged and some walked (though there were many gray heads at the front of the pack). First place went to Colleen Gallagher, with a time of approximately twenty-two minutes (“I forgot to set my stopwatch!”).
