Fleming to direct Fats Waller musical at Central State

Local actor and director John Fleming, the creative director of YS Kids Playhouse, will direct Central State University students in the musical “Ain’t Misbehavin'” at the CSU Robeson Auditorium on campus. The event is a collaboration between Fleming, the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, and the Zoot Theater of Dayton.
While Central State does not have a theater program, its music and jazz studies programs are strong, according to Fleming, who teaches theater classes at the school.
“The students are known for the quality of their voices,” he said.
While “Ain’t Misbehavin”‘ is traditionally a musical review based on 23 songs by the legendary jazz pianist and composer Fats Waller, this production will use an original story to bring the songs together, Fleming said. The story is set in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s.
The play will take place at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, and 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 3. Tickets are $1 for students and $10 for the general public.
