Solar tour continues this weekend

The annual Ohio Solar Tour will continue through the weekend, Friday–Sunday, Oct. 4–6 with five sites in and around the village.

In its seventh year on the tour, the Stockwell residence, 340 E. Yellow Springs-Fairfield Rd., will showcase its 2.5-kW wind turbine as well as solar photovoltaic and solar thermal systems. It’s open on Friday, Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Just north of the village, the Iconis-Taylor residence at 5015 Tanyard Rd., Yellow Springs, features a geothermal heat pump and 12.09-kW solar array providing renewable energy to a 1904 home. The home is open for tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5.

A house and barn renovated for energy-efficiency and 6.7-kW solar photovoltaic array will be on display at 736 Jacoby Rd., Yellow Springs, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6.

A 6.75-kW solar photovoltaic array will be on display at the Dixon residence, 505 King St., from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The Weigand/Heaton solar thermal energy-efficiency home will be open for tours from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6. The two-story straw bale home is made of many repurposed and sustainable materials including old barn timbers and beams, metal roof, straw walls with lime stucco exterior and interior walls. In addition, the energy efficient design included energy recovery ventilation (ERV) unit, and a hybrid radiant floor and domestic hot water system using a boiler and roof mounted solar hot water collectors.
