Yellow Springs schools on two-hour delay

The Yellow Springs Board of Education decided Tuesday evening to delay village schools by two hours Wednesday, Jan. 22, due to severely cold weather and likelihood of more snow before noon.

As of 10:30 p.m., the Antioch School and the Yellow Springs Children’s Center have not yet provided notification of their status, and are assumed to be operating under normal hours.

The National Weather Service warns of very low temperatures, with highs around 12F. Though winds are mild, the wind chill will make perceived temperatures as low as -16F.

Low temperatures combined with wind gusts pose a severe risk of frostbite to exposed skin in 15 minutes or less of exposure. Stay indoors or cover up exposed skin if venturing outside.

Village police and Miami Township Fire Rescue will make rounds to check on people with known care issues. If you are concerned about someone’s welfare, please call the police so that they may check on them.

If you have no heat or are suffering from exposure-related issues, call 911. Please note that it is illegal for electric and gas providers to turn off services if the temperature falls below freezing.
