Yellow Springs Historical Society to give tour of Octagon House
- Published: May 6, 2017
Ever wondered about that odd yet elegant eight-sided house on Whiteman Street? Now you can satisfy your curiosity.
The Yellow Springs Historical Society is sponsoring an afternoon of exploration of the Octagon House, at 111 W. Whiteman St., between 1 and 5 p.m., with house tours and displays about the history of the house and its most recent owners.
The guiding philosophy and design principles of the octagonal house — a building style briefly popular in the 1850s — can be traced to the influence of amateur architect and lifestyle pundit Orson Squire Fowler (1809–1897).An eight-sided structure, Fowler maintained, was cheaper to build, allowed for additional living space, received more natural light, was easier to heat, and remained cooler in the summer. A suggested donation for the tour of $5 would be appreciated, and Yellow Springs Historical Society memberships forms will be available (Family Rate – $20, Individual Rate – $15, Senior Rate – $10).
