Way Back Wednesday — Oct. 11, 1967

Welcome to the inaugural Way Back Wednesday, the first in a series of posts that take a glance into the archives of the YS News. This post will take you back 50 years to 1967, when the paper was still produced on a Linotype machine and you could get two pounds of prunes for 59 cents — if that was your thing, anyway. Below is a small gallery of images from the Oct. 11, 1967 issue of the YS News — which, at that time, was published on Wednesdays.

In recent weeks, the News has run several letters voicing support and appreciation for our village grocery store. Fifty years ago, the village had two: Luttrell’s SuperValu, now Tom’s Market; and the IGA Foodliner, since replaced by Dollar General. The first two images in the gallery show advertisements from the stores, both of which had good deals on beans and pineapple-related products — though the Luttrell’s ad wins for its excellent repeated use of the words “baby beef.”

Next in the line-up is a report on the candidates running for Village Council. Then as now, candidates were getting ready to present their platforms at a public forum, though at that time, it was sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Since 1993, the James A. McKee Association has facilitated Candidates Nights for those running in local elections; this year’s iterations of the time-honored public service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 18 and Thursday, Oct. 19. Fred Bartenstein will facilitate discussion with candidates for mayor and Board of Education on Wednesday, and Jalyn Roe will preside over talks with Village Council and Miami Township Trustee candidates on Thursday. Both forums begin at 7 p.m. in the Mills Lawn gym.

The final item in the gallery is a large ad in celebration of National Newspaper Week, Oct. 8–14, introducing the then-staff of the News to readers. Though the calendars for 1967 and 2017 are twins, this year’s National Newspaper Week was held one week earlier, Oct. 1–7. We didn’t observe — or actually even know about — National Newspaper Week, nor did we run a “Meet the News” ad this year, though perhaps we might in the future. Until then, if you want to “Meet the News,” stop into the office at 253 1/2 Xenia Avenue — where we’ve been for more than 50 years, and hopefully a few more — and take your own journey through our bound archives.
