DEMANDING ACTION ON THE PART OF THE OHIO STATE LEGISLATURE TO ENACT STRICTER GUN CONTROL LAWS

RESOLUTION 2019-38, VILLAGE OF YELLOW SPRINGS, OHIO

WHEREAS, Council for the Village of Yellow Springs affirms the inherent
worth of every human life and the necessity for reasonable balance between the
concept of absolute personal liberty and the right to live free from the threat of
targeted violence; and

WHEREAS, it must be acknowledged that the right to bear arms comes with a
responsibility to avoid domestic terrorism and loss of life, and 250+ mass shootings
in one year is clear evidence of the need to move beyond “thoughts & prayers” and
“culture of violence” platitudes and #DoSomething; and

WHEREAS, the Village of Yellow Springs strongly supports Governor DeW-
ine’s recent iniatives to increase gun safety through increased background checks
and safety protection orders; and

WHEREAS, the Village of Yellow Springs demands that this effort not stop
there but continue to actively address gun violence, which violates the life, liberty
and pursuit of happiness of Ohioans, by implementing common sense gun control
policies not limited to comprehensive background checks, bans on semi-automatic/
assault weapons and accessories that facilitate mass shootings, as well as permit-
to-purchase requirements; and

WHEREAS, ensuring the safety of Yellow Springs residents and visitors is a
top Village priority that depends on a strong federal-state-local partnership; and

WHEREAS, state and federal laws and other forms of cooperation, including
allowing for local control, are crucial to the Village’s public safety efforts; and

WHEREAS, Council firmly believes that the epidemic of suicide by gun and
of mass killings will not abate until guns are significantly more regulated and
significantly less able to slaughter so many people so rapidly,

NOW, THEREFORE, COUNCIL FOR THE VILLAGE OF YELLOW
SPRINGS, OHIO HEREBY ORDAINS THAT:

Section 1. Council affirms its unwillingness to tolerate complicity through
inaction or any effort to appease the gun lobby.

Section 2. Council demands continued action and accountability on the part of our
State government to recognize and take control of this uniquely American epidemic.

Section 3. Council advocates that local control be returned to municipalities
to enact common sense gun control policies that enable local governments to keep
their community members safe.
