Music teacher Jo Frannye Reichert led students in “We Shall Overcome” as they marched through the gym holding up signs calling for world peace, racial equity and environmental justice, among other themes. Over the month, some grades had read the book “Let the Children March,” which is about Birmingham Children’s Crusade of 1963.

Peaceful assembly

Mills Lawn School students sang, marched, spoke and celebrated during an assembly on the Civil Rights Movement on Thursday, Feb. 27, the culminating event of Black History Month at the local school.
