WYSO wins big at Ohio AP awards

Earlier this month, it was announced that WYSO Public Radio news reporters had won seven awards from the Ohio Associated Press for reporting in 2010.  WYSO competes in the medium market category, which includes both commercial and non-commercial stations in Dayton.  WYSO won awards in the following categories:

• First place in “Best use of sound” for Emily McCord’s  “Local Entrepreneur Writes Jingles for Work.”

• First place in “Best documentary or series” for WYSO’s  “What’s Working.”

• Second place in “Best documentary or series”  for Emily McCord’s “Wilmington’s Homegrown Hope.”

• First place in “Best feature reporting” for Sarah Buckingham’s “Beards of Charity.”

• Second place in  “Best feature reporting” for Emily McCord’s “What’s Working: Fairhaven’s Job Seekers Group.”

• Second place in “Extraordinary coverage of a scheduled event” for Jerry Kenney’s  “World Aids Day.”

• Second place” in “Extraordinary coverage of a scheduled event” for WYSO’s  “2010 Election Coverage.”

The entire WYSO reporting staff includes Jerry Kenney, reporter and local host of Morning Edition,  Emily McCord, reporter and local host of the evening news program All Things Considered,  Sarah Buckingham, Community Voices coordinator and Juliet Fromholt, webmaster.

Emily McCord served on the AP board of directors this year and represented WYSO at the awards ceremony in Columbus.  “WYSO won more awards than any other radio station in our category. It was an honor to accept the awards on behalf of WYSO and to be recognized for our hard work this year.”

These awards were for stories that were on the air between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2010.
