Block parties next weekend
- Published: August 11, 2011
The annual Yellow Springs neighborhood block parties, sponsored by the Village Human Relations Commission, or HRC, will take place over the weekend of Aug. 19–21, with most planned for Sunday, Aug. 21, 5–8 p.m.
The HRC is in its third year at sponsoring the block parties, which are aimed at strengthening neighborhoods, according to HRC member Joan Chappelle.
As of this week, parties are planned for the neighborhoods of West Center College/West South College; Omar Circle; Friends Care Community/Herman; Kingsfield/Thistle Creek; Livermore/Kurt; Rice Road; Stafford Street/Limestone; Pleasant/Walnut; Whitehall/Northwood; the cul de sac on High Street; and East Fairfield/Cemetery/Cliff Streets. Those in other neighborhoods who wish to host parties should contact Chappelle at 767-7056 or Patti Dallas at 767-7884.
The HRC will provide for each neighborhood party $20 for supplies at Tom’s Market; colored chalk for sidewalk drawing; nametags; and a form to fill out in order to alert police when and where to close off a street. Organizers are responsible for inviting neighbors and making sure there are tables, chairs and potluck items at the party, which takes place outside on the street.
