John Owen Hevelin

John Owen Hevelin, born May 10, 1946, died in Santa Cruz, Calif. on May 11. He had deep attachments to Yellow Springs and to Antioch College, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in English, education and history in 1968. A life-long pacifist, John was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War and was assigned alternate service caring for developmentally delayed adolescents. John was a production manager for the African Studies Association in Boston and Berkeley for many years, and a technical writer, computer programmer and manager in the San Francisco Bay Area for close to 25 years, mostly at Sun Microsystems. He was a member of the Advisory Board for the 15th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.

John was preceded in death by his father, Robert Kelso; his mother, Elsie Jane Owen Hevelin of Yellow Springs; and his brother, Scott Hevelin. He is survived by his brothers Bruce Hevelin and Will Forest (Catherine), nieces Sarah Hevelin Babcock (Darius) and Kelsey M. Forest, nephew Owen Forest, and partner Leslie Blitman. A private celebration of John’s life will be scheduled. In lieu of flowers, John requested contributions to Planned Parenthood or the American Friends Service Committee.
