Girls varsity opens season 1–1
A combination of Elizabeth Smith’s scoring and Shanice Wright’s dominance on the boards gave the Yellow Springs High School girls varsity basketball team the edge over Stivers at the Waynesville Tournament this weekend.
Smith put in 24 points for the Bulldogs and Wright brought down 20 rebounds during YSHS’ 45–43 victory. Smith added 14 more rebounds, while Wright was the team’s second-leading scorer, with 16 points. Danny Horton contributed four points.
The Bulldogs’ control of the boards gave them 28 second-chance points in the contest while limiting Stivers to just two. Overall YSHS out rebounded Stivers 56–4. However, poor shooting by the Bulldogs (who were 13–67, or 19 percent) allowed Stivers to stay in the game. But YSHS put in 18 free throws to secure the win.
Earlier in the tournament, the Bulldogs lost to Waynesville 58–28, struggling with a 21 percent field goal percentage. Smith once again led the team with 13 points, Wright contributed 10 points and had five blocks and Julie Roberts made two fields goals.
