Indians sweep Minor League

They hadn’t played a game in more than a week, but the regular season Minor League champion Winds Cafe Indians didn’t miss a beat going into tournament play last week. They put an exclamation point on the season by taking the post-season championship as well with victories over both the Peach’s Reds and Tom’s Market Pirates.

The Indians took their opening round game with a 7–3 victory over the Reds on Monday, July 27. The Reds took a first-inning 2–0 lead on an RBI groundout by Anthony Mascola to score Jake Ortiz-Thornton and Max Lugo’s RBI single to score Tallis Onfroy-Curley. Joe Freeman’s second inning base hit then scored Avry Bell-Arment to put the Reds up 3–0. The Indians survived the Reds’ surge and put up two runs of their own in the second on RBI singles by Hazen VanMeter to score Jaymon Reinscheld and Reagan Dunn that plated VanMeter. The Indians then took and never surrendered the lead in the third, scoring three runs on Isaac Grushon’s RBI double to score Henry Smith-Heston, a Krishan Miller base hit to score Grushon and an Aiden Scavone ground ball that scored Dunn. The Indians added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Sameer Sajabi’s RBI single scored Camilla Dallas-Gonzalez and Henry Smith-Heston grounded out to second but scored Dunn.

The Tom’s Market Pirates continued their late season surge with a decisive 15–1 victory over the Vintage Truck Dragons on Wednesday, July 29. Seven Pirate hitters combined for 17 hits, 13 RBIs and 12 runs scored. The Pirates put the game away early with nine runs in the first three innings, including six in the first on Ben Espinosa’s two-run triple to score Ethan Knemeyer and Teddy Horvath, a Jason Knemeyer two-run home run to plate Espinosa, and Sebastian Thompson’s center field triple to score Scout Espinosa and Shawn VanHoose. A Jack Horvath second inning groundout then scored Noah VanHoose, followed by two more runs in the third on Jason Knemeyer’s RBI triple to score Ben Espinosa and then Scout Espinosa’s groundout to score Knemeyer. The Dragons’ only score came in the bottom of the third when Liam McClean’s center field single scored Antonio Chatin. The Pirates offense cranked up again in the fourth with six more runs when Ethan Knemeyer tripled to center scoring Jack Horvath and Malcolm Blunt, Jack Horvath’s groundout scored Knemeyer, Shawn VanHoose’s two RBI single plated Ben Espinosa and Jason Knemeyer, and Sebastian Thompson’s base hit scored Scout Espinosa.

That set up the championship game on Friday, July 31, which saw the Winds Cafe Indians dominate the Tom’s Market Pirates 11–1, with all 11 runs coming in the first three innings. The Indians put up six first inning runs on RBI singles from Lucas Dunn, Krishan Miller and Aiden Scavone to score Henry Smith-Heston, Isaac Grushon and Sam Miller, whose two-run triple plated Dunn and Krishan Miller. Rookie Camilla Dallas Gonzalez’s RBI groundout then scored Scavone. The Indians added four more second inning runs on an RBI triple down the third base line by Ava Schell to plate Hazen VanMeter, an RBI double by rookie Sameer Sajabi to plate Schell and an Isaac Grushon two-run triple scoring Brady Baker and Smith-Heston. The final run came on a third inning Aiden Scavone RBI single to score Sam Miller after his base hit. And the Indians tough defense was on hand as well, holding the Pirates scoreless until Shawn VanHoose singled in the fourth to score Ben Espinosa for the Tom’s Market Pirates only run.

The Winds Cafe Indians finished the season at 11–1, followed by the Vintage Truck Dragons at 6–6, the Tom’s Market Pirates at 5–7 and the Peach’s Reds at 2–10. Check the league website at http://www.leaguelineup.com/ysoyouthbb for complete season results and player statistics.
