- Published: November 19, 2015
Longtime resident Cecil Robert Newman passed away peacefully on Nov. 2 at home with family present. Cecil was born May 31, 1924, in Spalding, Clarendon, Jamaica, to Teddy and Mary Newman. He came to the United States as part of a government program that provided work force replacements for soldiers during World War II. Initially he was assigned to upstate New York and later to Ohio.
During his stay in Ohio, he met Isabel Adams through a program organized by Elizabeth Morgan to acquaint program participants with townspeople. After a return to Jamaica, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He and Isabel married and raised two children in Yellow Springs.
Cecil became a plumber and owned his own plumbing and heating business. He enjoyed running his company for many years until health problems forced his retirement. He trained several young men who also started their own businesses.
His favorite pastimes were automobiles, golf, politics, barbecuing and gardening.
Cecil is survived by his wife, Isabel. They celebrated 70 years of marriage on Oct. 24 of this year. He is also survived by his daughters Lynda Newman, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Annette Newman of Springfield, Ohio; his granddaughter Malika Carter, of San Bruno, California; brother-in-law David Hill; nieces and nephews and many long-time friends.
A special thank you to Dr. Ajaz Umerani and Dr. Pius Kurian for their many years of care and concern for Cecil.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Monday, Nov. 30, at the First Baptist Church, located at 600 Dayton St. in Yellow Springs.
