Sale pending on old fire station

In a special online meeting Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Yellow Springs Development Corporation, or YSDC, approved the sale of the soon-to-be vacant fire station on Corry Street to a buyer who was not publicly named. The vote was 7–1, with two abstentions.

Lisa Abel, YSDC president, said the buyer’s name would not be announced “until we have a written confirmation from the party and the YSDC.”

In a phone call after the meeting, she said she anticipated that the signing would be complete “in a couple of days.” The party’s name and the related documents will be made public at that time, she said.

The local quasi-governmental development group is handling the sale of the property for Miami Township Trustees, whose offices are in the building that houses the fire station. All current occupants will be moving later this fall to the new firehouse and township offices under construction on the south side of town.

Three “viable” potential buyers had expressed interest in the property, according to discussion at the last regularly scheduled YSDC meeting earlier this month.

The 6,027-square-foot building at 225 Corry was put on the market earlier this summer for a list price of $400,000. Originally constructed in 1956, with additions in the ’60s and ’70s, the commercial property is within the Central Business District and lies adjacent to the Little Miami Scenic Bike Trail.

A YSDC sub-committee handled inquiries and bids on the property. Members were Corrie Van Ausdal, who is one of two township representatives serving on the economic development group; Village Manager Josué Salmerón (who later left the subcommittee after a conflict) and Jeannamarie Cox, director of the Yellow Springs Community Foundation. Taking Salmerón’s place was Community Foundation board member Roger Reynolds. Salmerón and Cox are invited participants, but not voting members, of the YSDC and Reynolds is not a member of the group.

The sub-committee made a sale recommendation to the larger group Tuesday in an executive session over an hour long, not open to the public. The group returned to the public forum for the vote.

Voting yes were Abel; VanAusdal; Steve Conn and Steve McQueen, who represent the school board; Lisa Kreeger, from Village Council; Hannah Montgomery, from Antioch College; and Karen Wintrow, from the Chamber of Commerce.

Village Council member Marianne MacQueen cast the lone no vote. Township Trustee Don Hollister and villager Patrick Lake abstained.

The executive session and subsequent vote were the only business on the 4:30 p.m. meeting agenda. More information will be posted on ysnews.com as it becomes available.
