Lois Gladchild, of Yellow Springs and Stockport, Ohio, died Tuesday, May 14, at 4:15 p.m.
Lois was born on Feb. 3, 1943, in Tuscola, Illinois, to Lowell and Gladys Tucker. Born Lois Tucker, she was also known as Lois Andrew and Lois Boehm.
Lois raised her children, Elizabeth “Ebie” and Frank, in Yellow Springs. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wright State University, where she retired as an associate of budget and regents reporting in the university’s administration. She also earned a degree in teaching English as a second language.
Lois, well-known for her love of dancing, engaged in many communities, including the Unitarian Universalists, of Yellow Springs and Athens, Ohio; Threshold Choir, of Yellow Springs and Athens; the Glen Helen Association, Yellow Springs Weavers Guild, and the Yellow Springs Senior Center.
She found kindred spirits when she became a part of the Miniss Kitigan Drum, or MKD, Lodge. Known as Biizh Aanji, she became — with extensive study — an Oshkibewis, or Helper in the Medicine Lineage of the late Keewaydinoquay, an Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) Mashkikikwe (herbal medicine woman). In this role she provided ceremonial leadership for the MKD Yellow Springs Lodge for 20 years.
Lois was preceded in death by her mother and father; sister, Julia Bohannon; two brothers, Charles and Ray Tucker; and son, Frank Andrew.
She is survived by a brother, Lloyd Tucker; daughter, Ebie Andrew; grandsons, Sean Lake and Patch Kyaio; granddaughter, Anna Seifert; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a full and loving community.
Donations can be made to the Native American Education Fund in memory of Lois Gladchild.
