Students and staff roared in excitement as a check was unveiled with the tally of the schools’ month-long fundraiser for the Wheeling Gaunt sculpture project — $1,185.93. The coin drive was the idea of Kate Anderson, left, of the James A. McKee Association. Also cheering are Mills Lawn counselor John Gudgel, who helped organize Black History Month, Mills Lawn Principal Matt Housh, Karen McKee and (not pictured) Jerome Borchers of the YS Arts Council, which is erecting the sculpture.

Mills Lawn School students sang, marched, spoke and celebrated during an assembly on the Civil Rights Movement on Thursday, Feb. 27, the culminating event of Black History Month at the local school.
