December 7, 2021
Dear Mills Lawn School Parents & Families,
At approximately 11:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6, a community member walked past Mills Lawn School and noticed a distinct smell of natural gas. The community member called CenterPoint Energy, who came and did an external check on our gas sets outside the building. CenterPoint Energy determined the building was safe for occupation the following day (today).
As is their policy, this morning, December 7, CenterPoint Energy returned to do an internal check, along with Mechanical Systems of Dayton (MSD) and district maintenance supervisor, Craig Carter. A small leak was found in the boiler room which was quickly corrected.
Around 11:00 a.m., Principal Winston and I met with an Operations Supervisor from CenterPoint Energy. In situations like this, the district takes its guidance from the utility company. CenterPoint Energy assured us the building is safe for occupation. The supervisor, CenterPoint Energy technician, Mechanical Systems of Dayton technician, Craig Carter, Ms. Winston and I walked the entire building together and checked each room for the presence of natural gas. All readings were normal.
However, as a precautionary measure and so that additional repairs can be done if needed, Mills Lawn School will not be in session on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. It is necessary for CenterPoint Energy and Mechanical Systems of Dayton to check the entire system as well as the boilers. This means the building will not have heat.
Should you have any further concerns or questions, please feel free to contact the school at 937-767-7217. As always, we thank you for your assistance and support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Terri L. Holden,
Yellow Springs Schools Superintendent
Ms. Megan Winston
Mills Lawn School Principal
