  • Dealing with the storm aftermath

    Due to the unusually high volume of tree damage caused by Sunday’s high winds, the Village of Yellow Springs has expanded its efforts to collect branches and limbs in local neighborhoods.

    The YSHS girls soccer team won one and lost one last week. Beginning on Tuesday, Aug. 26, Yellow Springs evinced a 2–0 victory over Tri-County North, but lost to Sidney Lehman 7–0 on Saturday, Aug. 30, to put the team at 3–1 for the season.

  • Jeanne Rice

    Jeanne (Adams) Rice died on Aug. 28 in Dayton. She was 85. Before her death, she wrote: “With much appreciation to my many thoughtful friends, and to my loving and dedicated family who have made my life so special.”

  • Velma Duvall

    Velma R. Duvall died on July 30 at the age of 90. Her family invites villagers to a memorial service to celebrate her life on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 314 Xenia Avenue.

  • Monica Freeman

    Monica P. Freeman, of Yellow Springs, died on Sunday, August 31. She was 41. Born Oct. 7, 1966, in Newport News, Va., she was a graduate of Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University.

  • YSHS fitness open

    The fitness and weightlifting room at Yellow Springs High School will be open regularly for public use this fall, beginning this weekend. The hours this week are Saturday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon, and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 2, 3, and 4, from 5 to 7 p.m.

    The YSHS girls soccer team came out of the gates blazing this year to beat Urbana 3–1 in the first game on Thursday, Aug. 21, and take down Middletown Christian 5–3 on Saturday, Aug. 23.

  • Miller Memorial

    Russell H. Miller died on June 21. He was 88. His family invites you to a celebration of his life at a memorial service on Saturday, Aug. 30, 10:30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church.

  • Fun Run winners take the lead

    Jacob Gunderkline, a senior on the Yellow Springs High School cross country team, picked up the win Sunday evening in the 23rd annual Village Fun Run. The USATF National Junior Olympic champion in the 3,000m race walk, Gunderkline ran this two-mile test of fitness in 10 minutes and 47 seconds.

  • George Gerald (Jerry) DeWine

    George Gerald (Jerry) DeWine of Borrego Springs, Calif., and Xenia died on Aug. 12 at Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia, following a massive stroke. He was 73. Jerry was born on May 15, 1935, to George W. and Alice (nee Budd) in Yellow Springs.
